Moonbase Lappträsk is an initiative by ISRUtech Sweden AB intended to transform an old schoolhouse in the North of Sweden by the Finnish border into a moonbase analogue within a self-sustaining foundation (pun intended). Moonbase Lappträsk’s aim is to study and demonstrate technologies and systems required for sustaining long-term human colonization of the moon. I.e. not what the first exploration team would encounter but what will be required to make the colony independent of resupplies from Earth.
The project is subdivided in four process zones: Living, Greenhouse, Factory and Mine.
Progress as of 10/2 2025:
Living: Part of the building has been approved as converted to a dwelling by the Swedish building authorities.
Greenhouse: A room has been furbished as greenhouse and rudimentary hydroponics set up.
Factory: Existing ceramic oven and the school carpentry workshop. (Oven not connected and workshop geared heavily towards woodworking.
Mine: To include all extraction of natural resources, including energy. An unfurnished room in the basement has bedrock floor that can be used for rock-breaking demonstrators.
In the old gym, a section has been set aside for “outdoor” activities with possibility to control equipment over the internet – naturally with a 2.5 second delay to mimic radio signal roundtrip to the Moon from Earth.
